10 Reasons why Japan is so great – No.10 New experiences

I am going to finish the 10 reasons why Japan is so great with another broad but a valid reason. Japan is bursting with new experiences for even the most intrepid of travellers. When you go for dinner, walk to the shop, get on the train and from when you wake to when you go to sleep, Japan fills your day with new and exciting experiences. Being so culturally different to the west (and most places in the world), it is just a very different place to be and no matter how old you are, there is an abundance of….well, just new stuff to stimulate your senses.

In my opinion, part of what makes travelling and indeed life so varied and exciting are the new things that you encounter in the world. I would say that it is rare for a person to visit any one country in this world these days and to encounter something new and alien just about everyday. For the visitor, I would say that Japan manages to do this supplying a vast array of positive cultural experiences.

Japan is a wonderful country and I challenge anyone not to come away enthusing about the people, culture, country, transport, food and more, just as I have in this series of posts. I have barely mentioned the magic of sitting in an outdoor hot spring bath overlooking the snow covered mountains or staying in ryokan, wearing yukatta and being on the receiving end of some of the finest and friendliest hospitality in the world or the impressive traditional festivals with their mikoshi parades, yukatta-clad girls and fundoshi-wearing guys, fireworks, food and plenty of sake. These are the more obvious differences in Japan and are each worth a blog post of their own with a hundred other things, but there are a thousand other little elements of Japanese life that give you little surprises and make you smile.

There are a many other reasons as to why Japan is so great but, if you would like to experience an enlightening country like no other place in the world then you should seriously consider travelling to Japan.

Gesturing in Japan

Speaking Japanese is frustrating. After six years of study, I am still bumbling around in the dark. To be fair, it’s not an easy language for a Devonian to learn. People say yes when they mean no, there are several different words for I and you, and the drink called Cider is actually lemonade.

A carved representation of 6 years communicating in Japanese.

Recently though, I have realised I don’t need words; gestures are far more effective. They save time and limit embarrassment. (more…)

Learn Japanese! (Part Two)

I recently interviewed Peter Galante, the founder of JapanesePod101.com, to find out more about this online phenomenon. For the introduction to Peter and JapanesePod101.com please see last week’s blog, “Learning Japanese!”.

In what ways do you try to introduce learners to Japanese culture?

“Including culture and cultural insight in each lesson is a core part of our philosophy, and one of our unique selling points. In each lesson the hosts provide cultural insight on the conversation and related situations. We also have a Japanese culture class series of lessons discussing topics ranging from superstition to Japanese dialects. In addition, we have rich written blog. For each audio lesson a tremendous amount of research is done, and incorporated in the conversation. And in each lesson cultural insight provided by the hosts.”

“Recently we started to move toward video, and include footage from Japan to enhance the experience. A video on how to visit a shrine can be seen here on our YouTube channel.”

How do you feel that Japanesepod101.com compares to other Japanese language programs?

“There are so many great Japanese study websites, programs and books available now. We recommend you try as many as you can. After using many of them ourselves, we tried to improve upon them to create the easiest and most fun learning system out there.”

“We have audio lessons, video lessons, community, forum, and we’re lucky enough to be supported by our great community, so we can continue to innovate.”

“Recently we worked with the legendary Jim Breen to record his entire JDICT Japanese dictionary, 140,000 words. This is currently available on our site JapanesePod101.com and Mr. Breen’s site.”

“You can test out the audio dictionary by visiting JapanesePod101.com and registering for you FREE Lifetime account in less than 10 seconds.”

“This tool is absolutely incredible, and FREE to the Japanese language learning community.”

How many users/subscribers does Japanesepod101 currently have?

“Tens-of-thousands of users in 140 countries and territories, and several thousand subscribers.”

Would you recommend any other Japanese language learning programs to supplement the content of Japanesepod101.com?

“There are lots of well-made programs out there to help you study Japanese there are many of the books published by The Japan Times. An indispensable book for someone new to Japanese is A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar.”

“As for supplemental programs, I would say getting a speaking partner to practice is critical. Practicing what you learn is the biggest reward, and will enhance your passion for learning. We offer an online course, but we’re not currently accepting new students. So I would recommend trying to find someone to practice your Japanese with, an tutor, teacher, exchange partner, pen pal, either online or offline.”

In what ways do you try to keep Japanesepod101.com fresh and interesting for long time users?

“We use several strategies.”

“New members – were always adding new hosts and voice actors to give students and users exposure to different styles and methods.”

“New media – Not only do we have a large library of iPhone applications, do mini lessons and games on Twitter and have recently started a Facebook Fan Page to close the communication gap with our users.”

“Video – Recently we started to move toward video, and include footage from Japan to enhance the experience. Subscribe to our YouTube channel.”

“Feedback – we continually incorporate feedback from our listeners.”

“New tools and toys – new features like the audio voice recorder, iphone application like Pocket Japanese, Word Power Japanese and MyWords Japanese. You can try Free versions in iTunes right now.”

“Collaboration – working with others to create new more powerful tools. The project with Jim Breen to provide the Japanese language learning community with a Free audio dictionary was a great project to be a part of. And we’re hoping to work with many more people to provide bigger and better tools.”

“Visit JapanesePod101.com and get your Free Lifetime Account in less than 10 seconds.”

Learn Japanese!

JapanesePod101 - For students of Japanese everywhere

JapanesePod101 - For students of Japanese everywhere

Over the past few years there has been a massive boom in Japan’s popularity overseas. From manga and sumo to sushi and the tea ceremony, just about everything Japanese has gained an almost cult-like status and marked Japan as one of the world’s trend setting capitals. As Japanese culture has risen in popularity around the world so has the number of people trying to learn the language.

The Japanese language is one of the most difficult languages on earth. Japanese is famous for it’s 3 different intermingling scripts (one of which contains thousands of complex Chinese characters) and an honorifics system that will make your head spin! It is fair to say that Japanese isn’t the type of language that can be picked up in a few night lessons at the local university.

There are thousands of books, audio CD’s, and even computer software programs that have all been designed to help English speakers crack this enigmatic language.

So where do you start?

Well, there is one language program that has been gaining notoriety, and popularity, over the past few years.

JapanesePod101.com is a web-based learning program that uses a variety of media to help you learn Japanese as quickly and naturally as possible, making a name for itself by making an especially impressive effort to work with the iPod.

I recently talked to Peter Galante, who founded the company in December 2005, about JapanesePod101.com to find out more about how the website developed and what makes this program so different to all the other language tools in the market. I even got some tips on how to make the most of the site and “take your Japanese to the next level”!

What was the inspiration behind creating JapanesePod101.com and how was the format decided upon?

“JapanesePod101.com was designed to get people speaking and using Japanese right away so they would have great experiences and like Japan and the Japanese language more and more. We saw JapanesePod101.com as a way to provide Japanese language learners all over the world with a window to Japan and a look inside the Japanese language. We also wanted to teach practical Japanese, which is not taught in most classrooms around the world, to help people learn useful and practical Japanese to “wow” their friends, colleagues, teachers and others. Emphasis was also placed on including culture, pop culture, current events, and injecting fun into the lessons. In short, we wanted to show people how fun and interesting the Japanese language is.”

“The format was actually shaped by our amazing listeners. We incorporated their feedback and ideas to create the current format. Of course we used input from our academic staff and other staff, but many of the features and much of the format was community driven.”

What is the history of Japanesepod101.com?

“JapanesePod101.com started with 1 person in December 2005, and was made possible by the owner of Erklaren, a translation company. She provided support and resources. A desk and access to some translators at the company. In the first month, I was able to recruit a childhood friend to join the team, and he took control of the website and technical aspects. He was located in NY, so between him in NY and me in Tokyo, we covered 24 hours a day.”

“We were releasing lessons, and were fortunate to be well received by Japanese students around the world. Since then JapanesePod101.com has produced over 1,000 audio and video lessons, which have been downloaded over 40 million times in 140 countries and territories. Acting as the flagship brand of Innovative Language Learning, JapanesePod supported the expansion into 11 websites and 300+ iphone applications.”

“We hope to continue to provide Japanese language learners with fun and innovative tools to learn Japanese fast, and have fun doing so!”

What tips would you give a first time user of Japanesepod101.com?

“Next I would ask, ‘Have you tried the Fluency Fast Checklist and Weekly Schedule planner? These two simple, yet powerful tools will show you the hidden power of our system. By taking a few minutes to use the 2 simple tools just once, your experience will be enhanced 10 fold, and your results beyond your expectations.”

“Second, use what you learn as much as you can.”

“Japanese is a fun and rewarding language to learn, and with the language learning tools available to you today, you have a big advantage and can learn Japanese fast. The key is to use what you learn. For example, commenting on the lessons and participating in the forum are great ways to learn and use what you learn.”

This interview will be continued next week! (July 9th, 2009)
