The Streets of Takayama

If a picture is worth 1,000 words then I apologise for being a bit longwinded.

This is a photo blog of Hida Takayama, one of my favourite places in Japan. I couldn’t possibly do it justice with words or pictures but hopefully the following images will give you a glimpse of what it’s like to wander the streets of this small town that is nestled in the Japanese alps.

Nothing beats a night out in your yukata. Standard wear for many Japanese onsen towns.

This restaurant buys a new Daruma doll every year and paints in one eye in the hopes that this will bring about a prosperous and good year. Only if it's a good year do they paint in the other eye in thanks.

Outside almost every shrine and temple in Japan is an area with running water where you can purify yourself before entering to pray.

Fresh produce is brought in from the surrounding countryside and is cooled in the running mountain water.

An old woman crossing the street in an old part of town.

Every morning Takayama’s famous riverside morning market is open for business.

This young lad's cap was simply too cute for me to not include it.

Kuroneko (black cat) is one of Japan's more well known delivery services. I just like the logo.

A good night out.

Karakuri is my favourite restaurant in Takayama! Don't miss it.

Lots of people make it to the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall but many miss the Nikko Museum just next door. Make sure you stay until they simulate sunrise and sunset!

Japanese people are some of the friendly folk in the world. A day in Takayama will certainly have you convinced.
